Composting... made super easy!

Let me guess.... you're a busy person with minimal spare time but you're wanting to recycle, compost, reuse, and "do your bit" for our environment and your family....but want it to be super easy and time efficient ?? I hear you. Me too !!!

It doesn't get easier than this..... Worm Towers..... sunken in your garden beds or large pots.

How do worm towers work ?
As can be seen from the photo, worm towers are a pipe with holes in it which allows worms to enter and exit to consume the compostable waste that you put in it. They then wriggle out into the garden bed, aerate and condition your soil in the process, fed by the waste they are breaking down in your worm tower. The tower is dug into the garden bed and remains there.

Where can I buy a quality worm tower ? Click the button "Buy a worm tower" on the right.

What can go in your worm tower ?
  • food scraps
  • leaves, grass clippings
  • shredded paper & cardboard
  • coffee grounds
Ideally a mix of wet and dry. Avoid meat, lots of citrus & onion.

The wonderful thing about PVC worm towers is many fold. Here are some benefits:
  • your food scraps and compostable items are recycled, made into wonderful compost right in your garden bed.
  • the towers remain permanently in your garden bed, but you can easily remove them if moving house
  • quality worm towers won't breakdown in the garden bed unlike ones made from cardboard. You have them for years and years !
  • the  worm towers in the photos have a large sized capacity - more than half a bucket of compost can be harvested from each.
  • they are so very easy to use - lift lid using the finger holes, put waste straight in, no having to turn the waste, no smell.
  • they are pet friendly - your composting loving dogs and cats won't be able to get access

A word of warning.... there are towers out in the market that look good and are super cheap. Some are cardboard (they breakdown very fast and will need replacing within a few months). Others are too narrow to hold much waste or provide the area for the worms to effectively move around in.

Harvesting from your Worm Towers

Can I harvest the compost ?
Absolutely ! That's super easy too !

The photo on the right shows one of my worm towers full of wonderful compost ready to be harvested. My family's compostable waste has been transformed into lots of lovely compost by the worms in the garden. All I did was add it to the tower ! That simple !

With a glove on, it is as easy as reaching into the tower and scooping out the compost. The compost is fairly dry and crumbly, so simple to handle.

Two towers filled my black bucket, as can be seen in the photo on the right.

I then took the opportunity to clean out my paper shredder bin as well as adding coffee grounds from my local cafe. Worms LOVE both these items.

Add a bit of water to wet the paper and it's ready !

There is also plenty of room left for food scraps over the coming weeks.

So there it is... composting, recycling, "doing your bit" for our environment" as well as supporting great soil quality in your garden beds and pots can actually be SUPER EASY!

    Philippa WOOD

It all started with young girls’ upbringing in a country town and her devotion and affinity with animals.
“I’ve always wanted to get chickens, let’s get two” many years ago quickly grew into an obsession and passion for all things poultry.
Over the years, the love of chickens has opened many doors to explore the many facets of keeping chickens, especially poultry nutrition. To say it is an obsession is an understatement.
When a deep passion is coupled with years spent teaching children through to adults, a strong desire to formalise the sharing of knowledge and experience with others unfolds.  Thus Poultry Patch was born.
